- Iowa ranks second in the nation in existing wind power capacity, and 10th in the nation for wind power potential. Iowa’s wind energy resources could produce more than 551 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity each year, according to the American Wind Energy Association, which is more than three times the state’s current electricity production and enough to power 51 million homes.
- When the Maytag factory in Newton closed its doors in 2006, many residents lost their jobs. TPI Composites, a wind turbine company, has since opened a 316,000 square-foot facility in Newton, manufacturing wind turbine blades. This year, thanks to federal clean-energy tax credits, the Iowa factory will be expanded to meet the increased demand for parts from General Electric and will build a brand new facility in Nebraska, where they will hire over 200 new workers.
