Letters for Clean Energy and Climate
Thank you for signing up to write a letter to each of your Senators. We’ll be following up with you in the future, but you can get started today by reading these simple tips below.
- Write a letter
The best way to catch the attention of Senate staff and make sure they write you a response back is to write a handwritten letter. It can be short and simple (and should not be longer than one page). Just make sure to include the following in your letter:
- Make it personal. Give your personal reasons for supporting this issue. Is it important for national security reasons? Are you worried about your grandchildren’s future? Are you worried about the economy or losing the clean energy race to foreign countries?
- Let the Senator know who you are. Are you a teacher or parent? Are you a veteran? Did you vote for the Senator? What part of the state are you from?
- Let them know that you want each of your Senators to pass comprehensive clean energy and climate legislation this year. And that you want a strong bill that creates millions of jobs and sets a limit on harmful carbon pollution from all sectors of our economy.
- Ask for a written response on how they’ll make this a priority.
- Ask your friends and family to join this effort
Let your friends and family know that you’re sending handwritten notes to each of your Senators, who will be back in your state from March 29 to April 9 and listening closely to constituents. Remind your friends that now is our best chance to send your Senator a clear message, especially as the Senate could begin debating on a climate bill in a matter of weeks.
Host a letter-writing party, have your friends over for dinner or drinks, or find another way to collect all the letters by March 25 so you can send them by the end of the month.
- Mail the letters to each of your Senators
Make sure to mail your letters to your Senators before the end of March. You can look up the nearest Senate offices with the tool on the top-right of this page (“Find Your Senators’ Mailing Addresses”).
- Count your letters toward our goal
We’ve set an ambitious goal of delivering over 150,000 handwritten letters demanding the Senate pass the climate bill this year. Help us keep track of our progress by reporting your letter(s) below.
